China is willing to enhance high-level guidance with the

Italian side, respect each other’s major concerns, jointly build the Belt and Road, explore cooperation with third parties, boost

cultural exchanges and local-level cooperation, and strengthen popular support for bilateral relations, Xi said.

The Chinese president stressed that in recent years, China’s National People’s Con

gress and the Italian Senate have established a regular exchange mechanism.

China supports the two countries’ legislative bodies to carry out multi-level, wide-ranging and multi-c

hannel exchanges and cooperation, and share successful experience on major issues such as legislative supervision, state gov

erning, national economy and the people’s livelihood, on the basis of mutual respect and mutual learning, Xi said.

He said he hopes that the Italian Senate will continue to play an active facilitating role, and cr

eate better conditions for and inject greater momentum into the development of bilateral relations.

cel Hirscher has won eight straight World Cup overall titles but

On the men’s circuit, Marcel Hirscher is arguably the greatest ski

racer there has ever been, but he hinted in Andorra his stellar career could be nearly over.

The Austrian great has sealed an unprecedented eighth World Cup season

overall title as well as a sixth giant slalom season crown and fifth in a row.

But the 29-year-old was unimpressed with his lackluster sixth place in the final

World Cup giant slalom of the season Saturday.

”If I ski further I have a lot of work to do,” he told Eurosport in the finish area in Soldeu.

”Before I have to have a clear mind and maybe as well I have to make the

right decision for the future what are my plans for the upcoming season.”

Hirscher, whose wife Laura gave birth to the couple’s first child last year, has won 67 Wo

rld Cup races to sit third on the all-time list behind American Lindsey Vonn (82)

and Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark (86).

The Austrian star, who has also wrapped up a third straight slalom crown and sixth in to

tal, admitted at last month’s World Championships in Sweden that it could

be his last appearance at the biennial event.

Mocking O’Rourke’s gestures might seem a frivolous at a time

of national political angst and with a heavy duty policy debate already under way. But Trump is an expert at trivializing and belittling opponents, to de

tract from the gravity of their arguments and to feed the conservative media machine.

His diagnosis of Jeb Bush’s “low energy” four years ago established a narrative about the former Florida gove

rnor’s campaign that hinted at a grain of truth. The one-time GOP front-runner could never recover.

Trump vs. Brexit — and Obama

At one point in the meeting Tump, said he wasn’t going to “comment on Bre

xit,” but characteristically unable to constrain himself, could barely leave the topic alone.

At the start of his meeting, Trump welcomed Varadkar, and poin

ting out that his visitor was in a difficult position over Britain’s tortured attempts to comp

lete its withdrawal from the European Union, which could harm Ireland’s peace and prosperity.

This generation has grown up in an era when China

has made tremendous economic achievements, and they have enjoyed affluent material conditions since childho

od. So they set higher standards for life and ask for better quality and unique experiences,” Tang said.

“Compared with the older generation, they are more willing to pay for conveni

ence, entertainment, mental stimulation, companionship and education that will benefit their future careers.”

George Ren, a senior partner with global consultancy Roland Berger, said many companies have star

ted to respond to this demographic shift in recent years, as they have seen great potential in the singles’ economy.

“They have made products of smaller size, in smaller packages or with more divided functions. They have also deve

loped unique and personalized services to cater to the diversified demands from single people,” he said.

Chen Jingxue, a researcher with Kantar Worldpanel, sai

many Chinese leave their hometowns to make a living in big cities, where they live alone. This makes it inevitable that they will do things on their own at times.

“Due to life’s stresses, sometimes they will actively look for the chance to escape from social interaction to enjoy solitude. As a re

sult, dining, traveling and singing karaoke or watching movies alone has become more common,” she said.

Chen added that the perception of single people has witnessed profound

changes, as there is no longer any stigma attached to them and many prefer to remain alone.

“Whether in TV shows or movies, there are increasing scenarios that tell people they sho

uld remain independent, and it is possible to live a nice life without getting married, especially for women,” she said.

True, China still lags behind science and technology powerh

ouses in terms of investment in basic research due to several factors. But that should not prevent Chinese researchers from wo

rking to achieve breakthroughs that could change the world.

With further economic development and strengthened emphasis

on scientific innovation, the funding for basic research, that is, investment in research and d

evelopment, will undoubtedly rise. And when R&D investment increases, science and technology development ente

rprises will be encouraged to play a much bigger role in the scientific and economic development of the country.

Eighth Labour MP resigns from party, as Corbyn and allies

Another British member of parliament has quit the opposition Labour Party, in the wake of se

ven lawmakers splitting to form the Independent Group in Parliament earlier this week.

Those lawmakers cited disagreements over Brexit with Labour’s left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn, an

d concerns over alleged anti-semitism within the party as their reasons for leaving the party.
Late

on Tuesday, Joan Ryan, MP for the London constituency of Enfield North and chair of the Labour Friends of Israel, tweete

d that she was leaving the party because it had in her view “become infected with the scourge of anti-Jewish racism.”

In a strongly worded resignation letter, she blamed Corbyn for the current situatio

n and said she could not “in good conscience support or represent a party which adopts such an attitude.”

After 4 decades, I have made the terribly difficult decision to resign from the Labour Party. It is the

greatest honour of my life to represent the people of #Enfiel

dNorth. I will continue to represent and speak up for them as a member of the @TheIndGroup of MPs #ChangePolitics

pic.twitter.com/W8UEsJG7RhLate last year, Ryan’s constituency passed a motion of no confidence in her 94-92. Acco

rding to the Times, the motion pointed to her constant criticisms of Corbyn, saying Ryan had “fueled and indee

d inflamed trial by media of the Labour leader.” Ryan, the motion said, behaved like “an independent MP in all but name.”

Moreover, the West likes to attack China by using Chinese

dissidents and their families. Western countries believe that they can easily dig up stories about those people and they can be easily manipulat

ed as well. However, what happened with Angela Gui has sent a clear message that there is always the risk of it backfiring. Those peopl

e are fully aware of being used by some Western interests, which results in a strong sense of insecurity and suspicion. Some of them are also selfish. A f

ew years ago, a Chinese dissident well-known in the West left China for the US and later embarrassed his American patrons.

Furthermore, nowadays Western public opinion is increasingly radical and populist, which has made it difficult for some countrie

s to adopt a realistic approach and repair relations with China after disputes. Some prominent for

eigners who have a comprehensive understanding of China are facing an increasing risk of acting differently from t

he radical sentiment. Recently, John McCallum, Canadian ambassador to China, was criticized and finally lost his po

sition, due to his attempt to ease the China-Canada relationship regarding the incident of Meng Wanzhou.

Last but not least, the incident has primarily embarrassed the Swedish Foreign Ministry m

ore than causing trouble to China. Some Western media claim that Anna Lindstedt’s behavior pr

oves China exercises significant influence on ambassadors of Western countries to China. Such a comment is hi

ghly unprofessional and makes no sense except to show they do not know what they are talking about. Am

bassadors are usually among those in their own country who hope at the utmost to maintain sound relations with th

e country to which they are posted. Generally, they are supposed to play a dovish role, not a hawkish one. Some We

stern media authors need to learn basic ABC knowledge of diplomacy. (The author is a commentator with the Global Times)
